PERVALE 2009

Named for (Per) the owner’s daughter, Valentina, of which Vale is the diminutive.
[per VAL -ee]

Blend:

Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and alicante bouschet.

VINTAGE:

2009 started with a wet winter and peaked with a very rainy April, followed by two dry months. The summer months were hot with episodes of rain and thunderstorms and August was distinguished with unseasonably hot temperatures compared to seasonal averages. The grapes were picked by hand by varietal, starting in mid-September, collected in 33-lb crates and brought to Urlari’s cantina for immediate vinification.

VINIFICATION:

The grapes are deposited on a conveyor belt that moves them using gravity (to avoid damaging the skins) to the de-stemming machine where the leaves and stems are removed. From there, the fruit moves via conveyor belt to a filtering machine that gently breaks the skins to release juice as the grapes drop to fill conical-shaped stainless steel tanks. Temperature-controlled fermentation begins and juice is pumped over the grapes every 6 hours using the same pumps that are used in heart surgery. After 2 weeks the grapes are gently pressed and the wine is aged 12 months in half new/half used French oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle.
